The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was a treaty between Mexico and the USA that ended the Mexican/American war.Click here to read it! With all this brewhaha going on about how wonderful/horrible the Arizona Governor is, I decided to do a little history research and came across the treaty, that for some reason I never learned about in school (American history, in American schools, is HORRIBLE). Its a very interesting read, and has some amusing points in it, one being this paragraph:
It shall not be lawful, under any pretext whatever, for any inhabitant of the United States to purchase or acquire any Mexican, or any foreigner residing in Mexico, who may have been captured by Indians inhabiting the territory of either of the two republics; nor to purchase or acquire horses, mules, cattle, or property of any kind, stolen within Mexican territory by such Indians.
I had no idea that it was such a problem, Indians capturing Mexicans and selling them off for slavery, that it had to be addressed in a treaty lol. That was one part of history that I wasn’t aware of. I always thought that was just fiction in the western stories my father loved so much to read.
But, reading this treaty made me understand a little more why many Mexicans believe that we “stole” California and Arizona from them, and that the US government owes them tax free living plus all the rights of a US citizen. The only problem with that thought, as far as the treaty goes, is it seems you had to be here for a year after it was signed in order to gain all those perks, and they were reserved for the Mexicans that were already living on the land (and their descendants) at the time the treaty was signed. But I could be wrong. Its a very heated discussion, and people should never mix porn with politics. I just wanted to share this treaty with ya’ll so you can be eddumicated when your ranting on yahoo lol. xoxoxo Noname Jane
